Leughenaer is an autobiographical fiction film that delves into Axelle Bruniau’s childhood experiences in Dunkirk, a city in northern France. The film intertwines Bruniau’s personal narrative with the rich cultural tapestry of Dunkirk, especially focusing on its renowned carnival traditions, which feature extensive cross-dressing and festivities that last for three months each year.
Central to the film are themes of non-binarity and transfemininity, which are explored within the context of Dunkirk’s post-WWII reconstruction. Bruniau uses this backdrop to parallel her own journey of deconstruction and self-reconstruction, providing a deep and introspective look at identity and cultural heritage
